Consists primarily of letters of Francis Vinton Greene to his mother Mrs. Martha Barrett (Dana) Greene, written in 1876 while he was on a journey by train from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to the west coast with General William Tecumseh Sherman, 1820-1891, and James Donald Cameron, 1833-1918, railroad president, U.S. senator, and U.S. secretary of war, and their families.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
